Deceased 25-09-2011 (71 years old) in Nairobi, Kenya

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan Environmental and Political Activist. She was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree. In 2004 Maathai won the Peace Nobel prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace in the region. She is known for founding the Green Belt Movement, a Kenyan environmental non-governmental organization.
